Description
“Furry Rascal” is a ginger kitten reaching a paw towards a big red bauble that hangs from a Christmas tree branch.
What the picture shows
The kitten is ginger and striped, with blue eyes and white whiskers. It stands on its hind legs, and one front paw has already touched the bauble. The bauble is large and red with a bright highlight, and it hangs on a golden thread running down from a branch above. On the right is a dense dark green Christmas tree with a pine cone, gold and red balls and the lights of a garland. The background is pale grey-blue, like a snowy window, so the ginger fur and the red bauble become the brightest spots of the painting.
The kitten’s fur is built from many small areas, from cream to dark brown. They are what makes it look fluffy, so this is the place for the finest brush and a little patience. The bauble, by contrast, is painted in large patches of several reds, and the background fills in quickly.

It works well to go from light tones to dark and from large areas to small ones: the background and the bauble first, then the tree, and the fur and eyes last. The canvas is already stretched, so once the varnish is dry the painting can go straight on the wall. The easel, candles, pine cones, mug of cocoa, dried orange slices and Christmas decor in the photos are props for the shoot and are not part of the kit.
