Toile imprimée pour broderie de perles (sans perles) « Berceuse »

“Cradlesong” — a woman in a golden dress wheels a pram over the night cobblestones of an old town while a thin crescent hangs above the roofs. The mood is quiet and slightly fairy-tale.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a slender figure in a long dress of deep gold and ochre, a tall turban on her head and blue ribbons falling to the ground. To the right is an ornate shell-shaped pram with golden scrolls and white wheel spokes. Around them crowd little houses with red roofs and warm windows; a small tree with blue foliage stands on the left and clumps of blue flowers below. The sky is deep navy, sown with tiny stars and a slim yellow moon. Coverage is partial but dense: beads fill the figure, the pram, the houses, the flowers and the stars, while the depth of the sky and the cobblestones stay painted on the canvas.
