Toile imprimée pour broderie de perles (sans perles) – icône « Saint Taraise (Taras) »
Description
“St. Tarasius (Taras)” — a waist-length image of the hierarch in a salmon-pink phelonion, holding a Gospel book.
What the picture shows
The saint is shown as an elderly man with a long grey beard, turned slightly to the right. He wears a pale salmon-pink phelonion with a large pattern, and over it a green-and-turquoise omophorion with dark crosses. Both hands hold a Gospel book in a green binding with a gold cross and stones at the corners; a round ornament shows at his chest. The halo is wide, moving from rich gold at the centre to a pale rim. The background is a light olive with printed leaf scrollwork; two fan-shaped gold corner motifs sit above, narrow brown-and-amber bands run down the sides, and a cartouche with the name closes the panel below. The beading is partial: beads cover the figure, the vestments, the Gospel, the halo and the frame, while the face, beard, hands and printed background stay on the canvas.

The piece is vertical, the size of a small household icon. It suits a name-day icon for a Taras. Pink with turquoise is an unusual pairing for an icon, and it is right where they meet that the shades need watching.
