Description

“Family sampler” is a square 300×300 mm piece of folk ornament in blue and yellow, with places left for initials and a date. Only four thread colours.

What the picture shows

The field is filled with a grid of separate motifs: eight-pointed stars, diamonds, stylised flower pots, hearts, small crosses and curls — everything a classic sampler was built from. The motifs alternate by colour, blue and yellow one after another, so the surface stays rhythmic instead of busy. The largest square motif stands at the centre, with two large letters to either side of it, the place for initials. A date is stitched in a frame below. The white fabric between the motifs is left open and works like the margins of a manuscript.
