Description
“The Night Watch” is a black raven on an old lantern with a burning candle, among autumn branches and red leaves.
What the picture shows
The painting is vertical. At its centre, on a wrought lantern, sits a raven: the plumage is built from blue-grey and near-black planes, the beak is heavy, the eye pale and watchful, the tail falls in a long wedge. The lantern is copper-bronze with glass panes, and inside it a candle burns — the warm flame and the yellow glow on the glass make it the only source of light in the composition. Bare twisted branches rise on both sides, carrying a few crimson maple leaves, with more lying at the base. The background is ochre and peach, lighter towards the top, so the dark silhouette of the bird reads instantly.
