Description
“Lavender Beyond the Window” is a round window with lilac shutters, and behind it a Provençal view with a field of lavender.
What the picture shows
The piece is square. At its centre is an old round window in a stone wall: the frame and masonry are stitched in warm sand, cream and golden beads, while the shutters stand wide open, filled with lilac beads and white veins that suggest the wooden slats. Through the glass lies a valley: a blue sky with white clouds, hills on the horizon, cypresses, a house with a terracotta roof and rows of lavender running all the way back. Two clay pots of lavender stand on the sill — the flower heads built from violet and lilac beads, the leaves deep green — and a cut bunch lies beside them. Green ivy trails down from under the sill. Part of the background stays as a watercolour print, so the beaded areas stand out in relief.
