Description

“Bright sunflowers” shows three sunflowers on tall stems on black Aida. The tallest piece in this group: 480 mm high by 210 mm wide.

What the picture shows

The sunflowers sit at different heights: two open face-on to the viewer above, the third lower and turned aside. The petals are worked in three shades of yellow — lemon at the tips, warm honey at the base — with fine orange veining. The centres are dark brown with a small grainy texture standing in for the seeds. The stems are thick and green, with large rough leaves bending outward. The black ground is left entirely unstitched, so the yellow glows against it as strongly as it can. Two faint pale rectangles, upper left and lower right, balance the composition.
