Description

“Flower grace” is a woman’s profile crowned with a lavish mass of roses and peonies in pink and coral instead of hair. White fabric, 22 colours, simple level.

What the picture shows

The face is shown in profile and barely stitched: the line of nose, lips and chin is drawn with a fine warm pink outline, the eyes are closed, the lashes marked by a few dark crosses. All the weight of the composition sits above: a full mass of flowers where open roses alternate with buds and wavy petals, worked from pale pink and peach to deep crimson. A few petals spill downward, continuing the line of the neck. The white ground is left entirely unstitched, so the piece reads as a watercolour sketch in which only the most important part has been finished.
