Description

“Gaudete” shows an old lantern with a lit candle and a red bauble against a blue snowstorm. The name comes from the Christmas hymn and means “rejoice”.

What the picture shows

The lantern stands at the centre: a metal body with a small roof and a ring at the top, glazed panels through which the yellow candle flame shows. The glass is rendered in pale highlighted crosses, so it genuinely appears to reflect light. A large red bauble hangs behind the lantern — the only warm note in a cold composition. Fir branches with small red berries frame the lantern below. The ground is blue, almost black at the edges and lighter near the flame, sown throughout with white specks of snow. The edges of the composition are deliberately ragged: the stitching dissolves into the fabric rather than being cut off by a border.
