Description

“Japanese irises” is a narrow vertical piece: a bouquet of lilac irises on a black ground. 160×430 mm, nineteen colours.

What the picture shows

Three open irises stand on tall stems, with several closed buds beside them. The petals are worked as a gradient from pale lilac at the edge to deep violet in the throat, and a yellow beard lies at the centre of each flower — the only warm note in a cool palette. Stems and long sword-shaped leaves run upward almost in parallel, emphasising the elongated format. The black Aida is left unstitched and works as emptiness does in Japanese graphics: the flowers seem to hang in the dark. Faint pale rectangles are laid behind several stems, hinting at a paper screen.
