How to do bead embroidery on canvas: video guide for beginners

Prepare the canvas, beads, needle and a separate strong thread. Anchor the thread without a bulky knot and sew one bead per diagonal monastery stitch, keeping the same slant and tension throughout.

Step by step

1. Match every bead packet to the chart key and keep colours separate.
2. Cut 50–70 cm of thread and anchor it under the area that will be stitched.
3. Bring the needle up at the lower corner of a chart cell, pick up one bead and take the needle down at the opposite upper corner.
4. Continue the row, checking the slant every 10–15 beads.
5. Secure the thread under finished stitches without pulling the canvas out of shape.

• Thread is not included; choose a thin, strong beading thread.
• A hoop is optional for a small piece; a frame helps maintain even tension on larger work.
