Step by step

  1. Sort the floss by number and find the centre of the canvas and chart.
  2. Separate the number of strands specified in the kit instructions.
  3. Anchor the thread without a bulky knot under the area to be stitched.
  4. Work a row of lower diagonals, then cross them with top stitches in one direction.
  5. Finish the thread on the back under several completed stitches.

What matters most

  • Do not pull the thread tight; the canvas must stay flat.
  • Do not change the direction of the top stitch, because mixed slants reflect light differently.
  • Check the symbol, floss number and strand count before each new section.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I start cross stitch?

Start from the centre of the chart and canvas, or from the clearly marked starting point in the kit instructions.

How many strands of floss should I use?

Follow the strand count in the key for your specific kit; cross stitch and backstitch can use different counts.

Can I use knots?

A loop start or securing the thread under finished stitches keeps the back flatter than knots.
