Description
“Witchcraft for Beginners” is nine small drawings in a grid of skulls — more a set of signs than a single scene.
What the picture shows
The field is divided into nine cells of equal size. In turn they hold: an open book with a candle, a ghost with round eyes, a pointed hat, two potion bottles, a cauldron with turquoise liquid, fly agarics, a crystal ball, a skull in a purple hat and a smiling pumpkin. The drawings are simple and flat, without shadows. The border is made of small white skulls and crosses repeated around the perimeter. The background is not stitched — the white fabric keeps all nine motifs apart. There are 10 thread colours. Each cell has its own background of small stars and dots, so they do not merge. Folds of cloth show on the ghost, bubbles on the surface of the cauldron, and an inner glow in the crystal ball, worked in several pale shades.
