Description
“Time’s Flow” is an hourglass among pansies and ferns, set against an old handwritten letter.
What the picture shows
An hourglass stands in the centre: a carved base and top in darkened bronze, with glass bulbs between them. The sand inside is lilac, and it sets the colour key for the whole piece. Pansies are scattered around the glass in shades from pale lilac to deep dark purple, each with a yellow eye at the centre. Fern fronds spread out behind them, worked in several greens that shift towards yellow and grey.
The background is not empty. Lines of handwriting are drawn across it in black backstitch: an unreadable letter fills most of the open field, and a thin border with corner marks frames the subject. This layer is stitched over plain ecru Aida, and it makes the piece look like a page from an old herbarium. The shadows under the flowers are hatched in the same way, not filled with crosses. Nothing here is tied to a season or a holiday.

Forty colours on a tall format: not a first kit, but not a marathon either, since a good part of the area is open background with the written lines rather than solid stitching. The gradients in the sand and the petals ask for the most attention, the ferns for the least. The frame, inkwell, pen, pocket watch, book and pressed flowers and leaves in the photo are props for the shoot and are not part of the kit.
